Police said nine people were shot and one was killed in a shooting after the Magic City Classic in Birmingham on Saturday night. Birmingham Police are investigating two shootings that, according to Mayor Randall Woodfin, injured eight and killed one. The shooting happened after the annual rivalry game between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University.

The first shooting happened outside the stadium perimeter and tailgate area, and six people were shot. Woodfin said it took place outside the Legion Field perimeter and outside the Magic City Classic tailgate area. Less than eight minutes later, a second shooting across the street from Legion Field in the Graymont Avenue area shot three people.

Woodfin said one person was in custody on a 48-hour hold and had a firearm equipped with a Glock conversion switch. He said that person was not affiliated with Alabama A&M or Alabama State, and investigators believe more than one suspect was involved. No charges were announced. Police said multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, and one person was detained and taken to Birmingham Police headquarters for questioning.

One victim is in critical condition and seven others are in stable condition, Freeman said. Birmingham Fire and Rescue treated more than 50 people, including the nine who were shot. The victims ranged in age from 19 to about 30. Chief of Public Safety Carlton Peoples also said more than 50 people were treated in the incidents.

Woodfin released a statement Saturday night calling the shooting senseless violence. Magic City Classic tailgating was suspended, and the public was asked not to go near Legion Field property, where the game was played.
