Election Day 2026 falls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and is not a federal holiday. Banks, post offices, UPS, FedEx and the major stock exchanges are operating normally. New Jersey recognizes the day as a state holiday, so some state and local services there may be closed.
The 2026 midterm elections fall on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and Election Day is not a federal holiday. It does not appear on the federal government's 2026 holiday schedule. As a result, most banks, post offices and financial markets remain open. U.S. grocery store chains and retailers are also open.
Banks and financial markets
Most banks are open during normal business hours because the day is not a Federal Reserve holiday, though individual branch hours may vary. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are operating on regular schedules. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association said both will be open during regular hours on Nov. 3.
Mail and package delivery
The post office is open and regular USPS mail delivery is running, because the day is not a federal postal holiday. Scheduled UPS, FedEx and Amazon deliveries are also running. UPS and FedEx are operating normally, including pickup, delivery and store hours.
State holidays
Some states observe Election Day as a state holiday, though Oklahoma does not. New Jersey recognizes it as a state holiday, so some state and local services there may be closed.
Upcoming federal holidays
According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, three federal holidays remain in 2026. The next is Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, followed by Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 26, and Christmas Day on Friday, Dec. 25.
