Going into Election Day, polls show Ken Paxton and James Talarico locked in a tight race for the Texas U.S. Senate seat. Paxton, the state Attorney General, is the Republican nominee. Elon Musk gave tens of millions of dollars to a super PAC backing Paxton this election cycle.

Paxton's opponent is Democratic State Representative James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian and former middle-school teacher. Talarico beat U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic Senate primary in Texas. He is a former Rhodes Middle School teacher who worked on San Antonio's West Side, an experience he says inspired his political career.

Talarico, 37, is seeking to become the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas since 1988. No Democrat has won a Senate seat in the state since that year.
