Selman, a 41-year-old human resources employee, was killed Wednesday at Citibank's Tampa office complex. The sheriff said gunman Jacob Pearson, 35, was angry over a debt collection. He was shot by a member of Citibank's armed security team and died at a hospital.
Selman, 41, who worked in human resources at Citibank, was killed in a shooting at the company's office complex in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026. She had worked for Citibank for nine years. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said there was no connection between Selman and her killer.
How the attack unfolded
Deputies identified the gunman as Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando, who had no prior criminal record. According to the sheriff, Pearson drove about 90 miles from Orlando to Tampa and crashed his car through a fence at the campus. The car ended up in a courtyard where employees were eating lunch, and he shot the first employee he saw. The sheriff said his rifle jammed after three shots, so he retrieved a handgun from his car and shot the same person again. She died. Pearson brought 90 rounds of ammunition to the campus but fired just 15 times, the sheriff said.
An executive who is part of Citibank's armed security team shot the gunman five times. Pearson was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Debt dispute and earlier threat
The sheriff said Pearson targeted the Citibank campus because he was angry over a $2,500 debt collection. About three hours before the shooting, Pearson called an attorney affiliated with Citibank and threatened violence, according to Chronister. Court records show Citibank filed a complaint against Pearson on Oct. 23, saying he owed $2,556.40 in credit card debt. A hearing was summoned for Feb. 15.
Remote work for Tampa employees
Tampa Citibank employees can work remotely for now. Citigroup said it will not demand that people return to the site on Monday or in the very near future.
