LIV Golf said on Thursday it planned to wind down. Executives leading LIV through Chapter 11 bankruptcy told a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in New Jersey that they would pivot toward a full liquidation of the league. LIV Golf is liquidating its operations, five years after it began its quest to upend golf with Saudi Arabian money.

BC Partners talks collapse

LIV said discussions with financial backer BC Partners had failed to produce an agreement to keep the league going. LIV's restructuring transaction under the Restructuring Support Agreement was terminated because parties could not reach a consensual resolution of certain outstanding terms. BC Partners Credit had proposed investing $300 million into LIV Golf, but deal talks fell apart. The firm, which had promised the money for "LIV 2.0," reversed course after seeing the difficulty the league was having recruiting players.

BC Partners, a London-based private equity firm, has reportedly backed out of its plan to fund "LIV 2.0" due to a lack of player interest and commitment. BC Partners did not receive enough commitments from golfers interested in reviving the tour, which had seen multiple events canceled this year, including a team championship. The future of "LIV 2.0" is described as completely uncertain, while many players who have left the circuit are planning to compete on the DP World Tour in 2027.

Funding and background

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf's primary backer, invested more than $5 billion in the venture before saying in April 2026 that it was ending its funding. LIV Golf was founded in 2021 by a group of pro golfers, led by Phil Mickleson and Greg Norman, who were dissatisfied with the PGA Tour. Fox Sports struck a multi-year rights deal with LIV in 2025, but ratings for its tournaments have been low. The CW aired the circuit's first two seasons.
