Everton played at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday, November 2, five days after beating the same opponent 3-1 in the Carabao Cup. Jack Grealish was not in the squad because of a breach of club discipline. Newcastle made two changes to their lineup.

Everton resumed their Premier League campaign on Monday evening at Newcastle United, with kickoff at 3pm ET on November 2 at St. James' Park. The game was broadcast on USA Network. Everton came into it having lost their previous two league games, against Arsenal and Chelsea. They were sitting below Newcastle in the table, and a win would have lifted them over Newcastle into seventh place.

The Carabao Cup meeting

Five days earlier, on Thursday, Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 in a Carabao Cup fourth-round match at Hill Dickinson Stadium to reach the quarter-finals. Everton led 2-0 at half time. James Garner scored in the 34th minute and Hayden Hackney in the 45th, and Thierno Barry made it 3-0 in the 69th. Dan Burn pulled one back for Newcastle in the 88th minute. In the quarter-final in December, Everton will travel to Fleetwood Town, a League Two side.

Grealish dropped

Jack Grealish was not part of Everton's squad for the trip to Newcastle. The club cited a breach of club discipline when it dropped him for the cup win. He was left out of successive squads as discipline for an unauthorized absence from training, and he did not travel with the team. Grealish is on loan at Everton from Manchester City.

Everton's lineup

Everton started in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Pickford in goal; O'Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite and Mykolenko in defense; Armstrong and Garner in midfield; Rohl, Dewsbury-Hall and George behind Barry. Jarrad Branthwaite returned to the starting XI after missing two games because of concussion protocols, and Harrison Armstrong was also back from the start. Jake O'Brien returned at right back. Hackney, a scorer in the cup tie, was on the substitutes bench.

Newcastle's changes

Matthias Jaissle made two changes from the side that started the cup defeat for Newcastle. Anthony Elanga came in for Jacob Murphy, his first start in almost two months, and Joelinton replaced Jacob Ramsey. Ramsey and Murphy dropped to the bench. The starting XI was Lukáš Horníček, Lewis Hall, Fabian Schär, Nico González, Joelinton, William Osula, Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga, Joe Willock, Dan Burn as captain, and Amar Dedić. The substitutes were Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Aladji Bamba, Yoane Wissa, Malick Thiaw, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Touré, Jacob Murphy and Jacob Ramsey.
