The Oct. 19 deadline to register online for the Nov. 3 general election has passed. Eligible Californians can still register conditionally at county elections offices, polling places or vote centers and vote by provisional ballot, which is counted once officials verify their registration.
The last day to register to vote online for the Nov. 3 general election was Oct. 19. In California, same-day voter registration is called conditional voter registration. Eligible citizens who need to register or re-register within 14 days of an election can use the process at county elections offices, polling places or vote centers.
How the ballot is counted
With same-day registration, a voter is conditionally registered and votes by provisional ballot. The ballot is counted after election officials confirm the voter is registered in that county and did not already vote in that election. Re-registration is needed if a voter has changed their name, residence address or mailing address, or political party.
Who is eligible
To register in California, one must be a U.S. citizen and California resident, 18 or older on election day, not serving a state or federal prison term for a felony, and not deemed mentally incompetent by a court. The same requirements apply to registering and voting on the same day.
Voting hours
On November 3, California polling locations will remain open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In-person voting centres are open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the days leading up to Election Day.
Other states
All states aside from North Dakota require voters to register before voting. A significant number of them allow registration on the same day that voting takes place.
