Apple has struck a deal to acquire Ascend.io, a company focused on agentic data engineering. The transaction surfaced through EU Digital Markets Act reporting and appears to be mainly an acquihire plus access to technology and intellectual property. Ascend.io says it is winding down operations.
Apple recently struck a deal to acquire Ascend.io, a company focused on agentic data engineering technology. Its technology uses AI agents to automate complex data engineering workflows, according to 9to5Mac. Apple acquired the AI company earlier this year.
How the deal surfaced
The transaction was disclosed through the European Union's Digital Markets Act acquisition reporting requirements. Under that law, Apple must publicly report acquisitions above a certain size. Apple informed the European Commission on June 30 of its intended purchase of the data engineering platform. The latest update to the EU's List of Acquisitions website reveals a deal between Apple and Ascension Labs, Inc., also known as Ascend.io.
Deal structure
The transaction appears to be structured largely as an acquihire combined with access to Ascend.io's technology and intellectual property. According to Apple's update, Apple will have the right to make employment offers to and hire certain Ascension Labs employees. The deal includes a non-exclusive license to Ascend's intellectual property rights, and Apple will be able to be assigned certain patents owned by the company. The register entry is not described as an acquisition of all shares in the company.
About Ascend.io
Ascend.io operates legally as Ascension Labs and was founded in 2015. The European Commission describes it as providing software used to automate and manage data pipelines. Its technology evolved over about a decade, from declarative data pipeline technology to a unified platform for ingestion, transformation and orchestration, then DataAware automation and Agentic Data Engineering.
Winding down and what is next
Ascend.io's website says the company is winding down operations as it prepares for its next great adventure. The site also describes a decade developing data-engineering tools and, more recently, agentic data engineering. Apple has not said what Ascend's team will do, so any connection to Apple Intelligence or Siri is guesswork.
Earlier in the month, Apple also struck a deal with an AI startup that lets musicians rework recorded music.
