A 97-year-old California man identified only as Vito died at his own birthday party shortly after dancing to the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." The story went viral.
Vito was celebrating his 97th birthday at a Halloween-themed party the week before the article was published. The party was organised by his 24-year-old neighbour, Los Angeles-based baker Eden Malinoff. Malinoff runs a cake and cookie business and shared the account on social media.
Malinoff prepared a special red wine chocolate cake for the occasion. She said that when she asked Vito the secret to a long life, he told her it was to never drink cheap liquor.
A person identifying as Vito's best friend commented that he died that night, surrounded by friends just after they sang him happy birthday. The comment was shared by a viewer via screenshot from an Instagram account, @caleba.turner, that claimed to belong to his best friend. The friend said Vito had medical issues whose severity they did not know. The best friend also said Vito passed away peacefully with his favourite music playing, surrounded by people who cared about him. Malinoff said Vito's friends believe he was ready to go.
