Rebecca Gayheart made her first broadcast appearance since Eric Dane's death in a pre-recorded conversation with Maria Shriver on the Tuesday, November 3 episode of Today. Gayheart said Dane's death in February was unanticipated, and that his health took a turn for the worse during a routine hospital stay. She also said that after his diagnosis something was awakened in Dane, that he became a different person and valued his life.

Dane's illness and death

Dane received his ALS diagnosis in 2024 and went public with it in April 2025. He died in February at age 53, less than one year after publicly announcing the diagnosis. He is survived by daughters Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, whom he had with Rebecca Gayheart. Dane's friends had him placed on a 72-hour involuntary hold (5150) at a mental health building next to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The memoir

Dane's posthumous memoir, "My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments," was published on Tuesday, November 3, by The Open Field. He worked on the book during the last year of his life. He died nine months before it went on sale.

Marriage and co-parenting

Gayheart and Dane married in 2004 and filed for divorce in 2018, but they never signed divorce papers. After his diagnosis, she dismissed the divorce filing, doing so in 2025. They co-parented their daughters.
