Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a Mercedes driver, finished third in the Mexican Grand Prix and clinched the Formula 1 world championship in his second season as an F1 driver. At 20 years old, he became the youngest world champion in the history of the sport. He is also Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Before the Mexican GP weekend began, Antonelli needed to score only two points to be certain of the title, even if his closest rival won all the remaining rounds.

Earlier in his career, Antonelli became F1's youngest driver to claim pole position. He then took his debut grand prix win at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, finishing five seconds ahead of Russell.
