Matt Damon said in a GQ interview that his wife, Luciana Barroso, had a brain aneurysm and underwent brain surgery the week before the 2024 Oscars. He said she is totally fine and joined him at an after-party. He also said he passed on starring in "Ted."

In a GQ interview published Thursday, Matt Damon said his wife, Luciana Damon, underwent brain surgery for a brain aneurysm the week before the 2024 Academy Awards. Damon revealed in the GQ cover story that Luciana suffered the aneurysm in early 2024 and went into surgery one week before the 96th Academy Awards. Damon said his wife is totally fine after the surgery. Damon has been married to Luciana since 2005, and they have three children together.

Despite the recent surgery, Luciana got dressed up and joined Damon at an Oscars after-party celebrating "Oppenheimer," which had won seven awards, including best picture. Damon said she surprised him by getting a dress and going out on Oscars night, the first night she felt well enough to get up. He said she insisted because he had not gone out the last time his film won best picture. Damon called her decision to celebrate with him heroic and meaningful.

Damon skipped the 2007 Oscars, where Martin Scorsese won best director for "The Departed," because he was shooting second-unit scenes for "The Bourne Ultimatum" in Miami.

Damon also said in the GQ interview that he passed on starring in Seth MacFarlane's 2012 comedy "Ted." The role was John, the best friend of the foul-mouthed teddy bear, and it was later played by Mark Wahlberg. Damon said he laughed hard reading the script but got too clever by half and talked himself out of it, thinking the teddy bear might be the best part. He said he overthought the decision, noting that the film shot in Boston, which would have let him be home, and that his father has passed away.
