Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, ending his tenure in his seventh season. The move came after a loss to Clemson dropped the Seminoles to 3-5 this season. Norvell's final game leading Florida State was a 36-24 loss to Clemson.
Record at Florida State
Norvell finished at Florida State with a 41-39 overall record, including 23-30 against ACC opponents. Norvell and the Seminoles are 10-22 since the start of the 2024 season. Florida State has also dropped 12 straight true road games outside Tallahassee.
The buyout
Norvell's buyout was roughly $50 million, among the largest in college football history. He will receive 85% of his base salary and supplemental pay for the remainder of the contract, putting his buyout north of $46 million. Florida State can pay the buyout in equal monthly installments or a lump sum. The amount would be reduced by Norvell's annual gross cash salary guarantee at a new job.
