Nicolas Cage said at Los Angeles Comic Con that he is living in hotels because something happened to his Malibu house. A reported sinkhole damaged the driveway of the property, and the City of Malibu marked 31 properties on the street unsafe after the road was blocked.

Nicolas Cage, 62, made an appearance at L.A. Comic Con on Saturday. He said at Los Angeles Comic Con on Saturday, October 31, that he is a little bit homeless and living in hotels because something happened to his Malibu house. Cage tied the situation to his Malibu mansion nearly falling into a massive sinkhole in September.

A reported sinkhole has damaged the driveway of Cage's Malibu mansion. The sinkhole opened after coastal erosion, accelerated by heavy rainfall, washed out the driveway. The beachfront property sustained catastrophic damage, and photos taken on Sept. 8 show a deep hole where the driveway used to be. Property records show Cage bought the home in 2024 for $10.5 million.

The City of Malibu said the collapse of a beachfront driveway extended into the roadway, blocking resident and emergency access. The city put red tags on 31 homes on the street and asked residents to leave, because the sinkhole blocked the only road in and out of the neighborhood. Seven primary residences were declared unsafe for occupancy, and 24 adjacent properties were slated to be red-tagged due to lack of reliable vehicular access. The city said all 31 properties were marked unsafe due to loss of access for Fire and Sheriff's personnel.

The damaged road was the neighborhood's only access route. The city said the homeowners association, supported by licensed engineers and contractors, was responsible for repairs. Cage is reported to have completed emergency permit applications immediately after the accident for installing sandbags, removing asphalt debris and conducting soil investigations.

Cage still planned to take his 4-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica on Halloween. That outing was to be followed by a late-night screening of The Shining.
