Sony is offering up to $400 for used PS5 consoles through a trade-in handled by Back Market. The top amount covers a standard PS5 with two DualSense controllers and depends on condition. Sony has not explained why it is running the program, and IGN's explanations are speculation.

Sony is offering up to $400 for used PS5 consoles, and it has started urging some owners to sell their consoles through a trade-in program. According to ResetEra user Jay_Horror, PlayStation is sending notifications to users of the PlayStation app on their phones saying they can trade in their console and have money sent directly to their bank account.

How the trade-in works

Sony does not buy back hardware itself but redirects interested users to Back Market, a platform for selling used and refurbished electronics. Back Market handles the actual trade-in, and it operates the program after Sony announced a partnership with the company in 2024. Sony has not separately announced a new PS5-specific promotional campaign.

What the $400 covers

The $400 figure is for a standard PlayStation 5 with two DualSense controllers, and it is a maximum rather than a guaranteed price. The top amount is available only under certain conditions and depends on overall condition. Notebookcheck reports the estimate covers a PS5 Standard with two or more controllers in Grade 0, or pristine, condition.

Prices and possible motives

The PS5 initially cost $500, but consoles now cost $600 to $650 depending on whether they have a disc drive, and the PS5 Pro costs $900. Sony raised console prices twice in recent months. Used PS5 Pro consoles are reportedly listed by resellers and retailers such as GameStop for as much as $1,400, and IGN says buying a Pro at retail price has become difficult as demand climbs ahead of GTA 6.

IGN speculates the offer may suggest Sony is preparing for a hardware shortage or wants pre-owned stock it can sell more affordably than a new unit. Sony has not officially confirmed its rationale for the promotion.

GTA 6 and Microsoft

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it is unclear whether Sony timed the program to it. The game was expected to boost hardware revenue, but Circana's Mat Piscatella has not seen evidence of that so far. Microsoft previously launched a similar initiative for Xbox owners, and it recently encouraged gamers to trade in Xbox Series X and S consoles through Best Buy.
