Sony has started notifying users about a trade-in promotion offering up to $400 for used PlayStation 5 consoles. Back Market runs the program. The top value requires a Grade 0 standard PS5 with a disc drive and at least two controllers.
Sony has begun sending notifications to users offering them the chance to trade in used PlayStation 5 consoles and receive up to $400. PlayStation is sending the notifications to fans who have the PlayStation app on their phones, as spotted by ResetEra user Jay_Horror. The campaign is timed ahead of the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Back Market partnership and eligibility
Sony is partnering with Back Market to offer the trade-in value, and Back Market operates the program. Sony has been working with the service since 2024. Xbox's comparable trade-in offer was through Best Buy in the US. Xbox sent select users a message a few weeks earlier suggesting they trade in their consoles.
The maximum $400 is available only for a standard PS5 with a disc drive in excellent technical and cosmetic condition, classed as Grade 0. The console must also come with at least two DualSense controllers. A flawless PS5 Pro with a controller could potentially fetch as much as $750.
Prices and alternatives
The PS5 initially cost $500. Consoles now cost $600 to $650 depending on whether they have a disc drive, and the PS5 Pro costs $900. After the last round of price increases, the Digital Edition costs $599.99 new and the disc version costs $649.99. Used PS5 Pro consoles are being sold by resellers and retailers like GameStop for as much as $1,400, due to demand ahead of GTA 6's release.
GameStop is only willing to issue up to $275 in store credit for some used PS5 models. Selling a console on eBay can fetch around $450 to $500, though after fees and shipping the difference compared to Back Market becomes negligible.
